The events in Washington on January 6 2021 have produced waves of shock. But they should not be a surprise. As said earlier, extrapolation and a look at historical parallels pointed to the likelihood of such actions in the United States in the present historical phase.
It can further be predicted that unless the American
political system is radically reorganized, January 6 could be just the first in
a series of similarly shocking events leading to permanent autocratic rule after perhaps
6 to 8 decades. Like similar future episodes the presidency of Joe Biden may
bring temporary relief. But such periods will again and again be interrupted by
upheavals.
It seems unlikely that the US politicians are capable
of reversing the downward spiral by their own efforts. The internal political
dynamics in the United States are too strongly polarized. And large parts of
the population are too uneducated and irrational and are thus easy prey for
demagogues abusing them to bypass the political parties and seizing control of
these parties.
Only perceived or real threats from external powers,
threats approaching the existential level may reunite the disUnited States.
